‘Rasika’: Indian Dance with Feeling

‘Moods and Rhythms’ is a choreography by Rajyashree Ramesh living in Berlin. It presents emotions that emanate out of situations in life. Invited by the Indo-German Society, she performed along with her ensemble ‘Rasika’ at the auditorium of the Ratsgymnasium on Monday evening. The dancers, amongst others the choreographer herself, presented a very good performance. Rajyashree Ramesh is making Indian Dance more understandable by returning to its roots in dance drama. With the help of this ‘Natya’ they showed moods and emotions, initially to the percussion rhythms and then to melodic instruments. From the little finger to mime, every part of the body was used in the choreography and a very explicit body language developed, which needed to be only slightly extended by stylised movements and could be understood very well. Rhythmic elements gave the pantomime-like dance a special flair. Body and music were very emotive. Thanks to the high expressive contents and passion, the spectators could completely immerse themselves in the story. It could not have been a more lively narration. A great performance leading to enthusiastic applause. Rajyashree Ramesh is a firm constituent of the dance scene in Berlin.
